Practising

How do I type the readings?

Type in romaji and Tadoru turns it into hiragana as you go: becomes か, becomes ん. You don't need a Japanese keyboard. If you have one, it works too.

How is my meaning graded?

Each sentence has a list of the ideas a good translation needs. Tadoru checks your English for each of them. You don't need to match a set wording. When you miss an idea, it says which one, and when you're close, it says what was nearly there.

Tadoru marked a correct answer as wrong.

Sorry about that. Email us the sentence and what you typed. A screenshot is easiest. We fix grading for everyone through content updates, usually without needing an app update.

Why aren't new kanji coming yet?

Tadoru only teaches a kanji once there are enough sentences to practise it, and it waits until your reviews are under control. You can change your pace in the Library, or open any kanji there and choose “Teach me this now”.

Where do the sentences come from?

Most kanji sentences come from Tatoeba, a shared collection of real example sentences. Each one links to its source. The rest, and all keigo sentences, are written for Tadoru and checked by a native speaker before they ship. Every source is credited in the app under Settings › Licences.

Can I make the tanuki quieter?

Yes. In Settings, choose Full, Quiet or Off. If Reduce Motion is on for your device, the tanuki keeps still.

Your progress

How do I use Tadoru on more than one device?

Sign in to the same iCloud account on each device and keep iCloud sync on in Tadoru's Settings. Your readings and progress follow you. Pace and settings stay with each device.

My progress isn't showing on my other device.

Check that both devices use the same Apple Account and have iCloud Drive turned on. Open Settings in Tadoru: under iCloud, the status line says what's happening. Syncing can take a minute after you open the app.

How do I start over?

In the Library, choose Reset to clear your kanji progress. Tadoru asks before deleting anything, and a reset can't be undone.

What happens to my data if I delete the app?

Your progress on that device is deleted. A copy stays in your iCloud, so if you reinstall with sync on, it comes back. To remove it for good, see Deleting your data.

Subscription

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

Open the Pro page in Tadoru and tap Restore purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought with.

How do I cancel?

On iPhone, go to Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions › Tadoru. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then Account Settings › Subscriptions. You keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for. Reviews stay free whatever you choose.

Can I get a refund?

Apple handles refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
